Bought by Jho Austin to prevent a developer from subdividing the higher elevation part of the ranch. Approximately 40% of it is deeded and the rest is leased from the State of Arizona and Bureau of Land Management.

Prolonged drought throughout the southwest and years of overgrazing have greatly reduced the grassland over much of at HYL Ranch. It serves as an important buffer for not only Fort Bowie National Historic Site but also the Dos Cabezas Mountain Wilderness Area and Cienega Ranch.

Conservation

The primary restoration work on HYL to date has been to reinforce and modernize aging water tanks on the ranch, build new tanks, and develop year-round sources of water for cattle and wildlife.
