Although the area had been ranched earlier, Adams Ranch was started in 1939 by Preston Elba and Georgia “Buddie” Adams and Ulice Adams in 1939.

Primarily a cattle ranch; over the years additional enterprises on the ranch included making candelilla wax and smuggling pelts from Mexico and Big Bend National Park when it was first established.¹
